Extern Programs

Loyola University New Orleans College of Law's Externship Program permits students to receive academic credit for working in selected legal placements, attending and participating in a bi-weekly class, maintaining a journal based on the experience obtained in the externship placement and producing a portfolio of their work based on their legal research and writing. Students are eligible for an externship opportunity beginning the summer after their 1L year.

The Program is part of the Office of Law Skills and Experiential Learning, which also includes the Skills' Curriculum. The Externship Program focuses on:

  • Providing students with an opportunity to gain substantive legal experience, under the direct supervision and guidance of an experienced attorney, so as to increase the sense of the reality of being a lawyer;
  • Focusing students' analytic attention upon the role of attorneys in our society; and
  • Using critical judgment upon various legal institutions which students will become involved during this course.

Through the Externship Program, students at Loyola's College of Law gain hands-on experience while making real impacts in courtrooms, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations.

Students may participate in an externship during the summer, spring and/or fall semesters.  Enrollment is limited, some academic restrictions may apply and all students who qualify and are accepted must obtain the consent of the Externship Coordinator to participate.

Once selected, externs are placed in a Field Placement Office (FPO) specific to their area of interest.  Over the course of the semester, the site supervisors and professor guide externs through specific learning goals individualized for each extern, such as Research Skills, Analytical Ability, Writing Skills, Legal Knowledge and Oral Presentation Skills.  Students will learn specific areas of law related to the site office and reflect upon the law and experience in the classroom.
